Meet the Staff

Emma Fawkes
Reuse Manager & Volunteer Coordinator

Emma has been passionate about computers for as long as she can remember. Her journey into technology began as a child, experimenting with Pentium II computers running Windows 95. Through countless hours of tinkering, she taught herself how to build, repair, and maintain computers, eventually expanding her skills into coding, web development, and learning the unique hardware layouts of a wide range of computer brands. This hands-on curiosity has given her a strong foundation across many areas of technology and electronics.

Now approaching six years with Free Geek Toronto, Emma has continued to grow both technically and professionally. Alongside expanding her technical expertise, she has developed valuable leadership and communication skills thanks to the supportive team around her. She's excited to continue growing with the organization and to see what the future holds for both Free Geek Toronto and her role within it.

As the Reuse Manager and Volunteer Coordinator, Emma oversees the day-to-day operations of the reuse program while helping train new volunteers and work placement participants. She believes the best way to learn is by getting hands-on, encouraging people to ask questions, experiment, and build confidence through real-world experience. Whether volunteers are working on structured community projects or learning through trial and error, Emma enjoys helping others discover new skills while making a positive impact. The most rewarding part of Emma's work is the people. She loves meeting the many individuals who come through Free Geek's doors, whether they're volunteers, students completing work placements, or community members looking for a little technical guidance. Being able to share knowledge, lend a helping hand, or simply give someone the confidence to tackle a repair themselves is what makes every day meaningful.

Outside of work, Emma enjoys a unique hobby: tracking down physical copies of cheesy TV shows from the '90s and early 2000s, especially the hidden gems that never received proper DVD releases. It's a passion that's just as nostalgic as it is challenging!

Matthew Faria-Seerattan
Shop Coordinator

Matthew Faria-Seerattan is the Shop Coordinator at Free Geek Toronto, where he combines his passion for technology with a commitment to helping others. A graduate of Seneca College's Computer Programming program, Matthew joined Free Geek because he believes everyone should have access to affordable technology, regardless of their financial situation. In his role, Matthew oversees the day-to-day operations of the shop, provides customer service, performs computer repairs, and assists with shop administration. While he enjoys every aspect of his work, the most rewarding part is helping people find reliable, affordable computers that can make a meaningful difference in their lives.

Although Matthew had no formal computer repair experience when he first started, he has grown into a skilled technician through hands-on learning and dedication. He takes pride in continually expanding his technical knowledge and ensuring every device that leaves the shop is something he would confidently recommend to a customer. His coworkers know him as approachable, helpful, and easy to work with.

Outside of work, Matthew enjoys staying up to date on the latest technology, reading, and spending time playing and watching sports. A devoted Toronto Raptors fan, he's always happy to talk basketball. For Matthew, working at Free Geek Toronto is about more than fixing computers; it's about giving back to the community, supporting ethical electronics recycling, and helping people access the technology they need to succeed.
